Keynote Roundup: Brian Honan

Infosecurity Europe

Keynote Roundup: Brian Honan, Founder & CEO, BH Consulting

Missed Brian Honan’s keynote on Fostering Better Engagement Between Business & Law Enforcement to Effectively Respond to Cybercrime? Not to worry, here’s an overview of all the key points.

What was covered in your Infosecurity Europe keynote?

  • A look at how businesses and law enforcement can cooperate better and work better together to tackle cyber crime and prevent security breaches.

Why is that such an important issue for the industry at the moment?

  • Cyber crime is becoming a bigger and bigger issue.
  • The UK recently started counting cyber crime in crime statistics and cyber crime is now the number 1 crime.
  • More and more companies are becoming victims, cyber criminals are becoming more organised, sharing information better, targeting victims better, while we are still working in silos.
  • Individually as businesses we are not sharing enough information and we are not sharing enough information with law enforcement.
  • When we do engage with law enforcement we don’t know how best to do it.
  • It’s time we break down those barriers, share information and help law enforcement do their job in taking down cyber criminals.

What were the key points the audience took away from your session?

  • Don’t wait until you’re a victim of cyber crime before you talk to law enforcement, do it proactively.
  • Contact your cyber crime unit, understand what they need from you should you become a victim and how you should present that information to them.
  • Look for ways to engage and share information with your peers and law enforcement together.

What are your recommendations for anyone out there addressing this issue?

  • We tend to focus on the threat du jour and not focus on how we get the basics right in our environment.
  • How to make sure our systems are resilient, robust and secure so no matter what threat factor or means of attack we will be able to repel those attacks.
  • Focus on the basics, look at ways to make sure your technology is implemented and secured properly, that your processes are working properly and your responses such as how to engage with law enforcement are well documented.
  • Make sure your people understand the importance of security and how to be more secure when working with your systems.
