Keynote Roundup: James Lyne

Infosecurity Europe

Keynote Roundup: James Lyne, Global Head of Security Research, Sophos & Certified SANS Instructor

Missed James Lyne’s keynote on Securing the Internet of Things: What is the Real Risk for Enterprise Cyber Security? Not to worry, here’s an overview of all the key points.

What was covered in your Infosecurity Europe keynote?

  • A discussion on internet of things security with an expert panel from various parts of the industry and also academics. Really looking at what it will take to drive security into internet of things devices.

Why is that such an important issue for the industry at the moment?

  • Cyber criminals have focused on traditional computers for some time now.
  • The industry can now see there is potential for incredibly vulnerable internet of things devices to be compromised, and to open up a wealth of new opportunities for attackers to access funds but also to impact life and limb.

What were the key points the audience took away from your session?

  • The average level of security and privacy in internet of things devices is 8 or 9 years behind the traditional computer, ask yourself do you want a device like that in your home or workplace or do you want to wait until a time when security has improved.
  • From the industry’s perspective, adding new features is critical, being fast to market is important, but many of the flaws in these devices are in the category of not even trying; do you want to be shown up as negligent or could you implement some best practices now?

How do you think this issue will develop over the next 12 months?

  • The big question everyone is asking in the internet of things is when are we going to see that big hack that gets everyone’s attention.
  • When will cyber criminals transition to the internet of things.
  • You can see why people would want to hack certain categories of devices, most IOT devices are toys at the moment, 2 months, 6 months, 12 months from now one of those devices will make its way into every aspect of our lives and see mass adoption.
  • Don’t we as an industry want to learn the lesson about security whilst they are still toys, rather than fighting rear guard action once they are in mass deployment.
