Keynote Roundup: Jaya Baloo

Infosecurity Europe

Keynote Roundup: Jaya Baloo, CISO, KPN Telecom

Missed Jaya Baloo’s keynote on Cryptography, Quantum Computing and the Future of Cyber Security Controls? Not to worry, here’s an overview of all the key points.

What was covered in your Infosecurity Europe keynote?

  • A look at quantum computing and the challenges it presents for cryptography and what we need to do about that.

Why is that such an important issue for the industry at the moment?

  • Everyone is currently working on a quantum computer that’s viable to break the cryptography that we all use globally to protect our intellectual property, our secrets, our facebook updates.
  • The idea is that as a community we need to think about how we respond to this; what are the multiple options that we have and how can we choose the best, most optimal mix to make sure we protect our security and our secrets not just for the time being but also for years to come.

What were the key points the audience took away from your session?

  • The future is closer than you think when it comes to quantum computers because of all the amazing people all over the world working on this.
  • If you look at the good operational security measures that are being implemented by governments, countries, institutions, it would be a shame if we missed the boat and would then suffer due to lack of preparedness for quantum computers.
  • We really need to start thinking about what research and development can we do and how are we going to protect our company data and that of our customers.

What are your recommendations for anyone out there addressing this issue?

  • The three phase plan:
  • Increase your current key length.
  • Make sure you are looking at quantum key distribution techniques for your absolutely vital links.
  • Figure out what your strategy will be to find and make the best post quantum cryptography algorithm as well as figuring out its implementation on devices and internet scale application.

How do you think this issue will develop over the next 12 months?

  • The European Commission has just launched a flagship programme where they are going to sponsor developments around quantum computing and quantum safe communications with 1 billion euros.
  • This is not just happening in the EU; it’s happening in the US too.
  • There will be lots of wonderful things that will happen from the information security community, because we have a very interesting set of conditions to operate in.
