Keynote Roundup: Lee Barney

Keynote Roundup: Lee Barney, Head of Information Security, Marks & Spencer

Missed Lee Barney’s keynote on Next-Gen CISO: How to be a Successful Security Leader of the Future? Not to worry, here’s an overview of all the key points.

What was covered in your Infosecurity Europe keynote?

  • A look at what it means to be a next generation CISO or security leader, particularly looking at leadership skills and if they are actually something that are necessary to be a CISO.

Why is that such an important issue for the industry at the moment?

  • It seems every day there is another company in the press for an unfortunate data leak or breach in their organisation.
  • The people you put at the very front and foremost of your industry to be the CISO is really important, because if you get the wrong person every decision that follows thereafter could be called into question.
  • CISO is the one role everyone seems to want to be doing.

What were the key points the audience took away from your session?

  • As a CISO you need to listen and learn, you need to understand what is changing in your business and to stay relevant.
  • Most importantly as a CISO you need to not be shy at coming forward, you need to be assertive. You need to make sure you go and act as an Entrepreneur.
  • You need to finish and deliver the things that you start, which surprisingly is a rare skill.

What are your recommendations for anyone out there addressing this issue?

  • Start a career plan, write down where you want to be in 10 years.
  • 10 years sounds like such a long time but it really isn’t, it comes much quicker than most people anticipate.
  • Take those 10 years and convert those into working days, you’d be surprised how few days you have to achieve those goals.
  • Work back from 10 years and work out the things you need to do to get to that position, only then can you work out if you are achieving your goals.
  • If you do nothing else, do that and you will be successful.

How do you think this issue will develop over the next 12 months?

  • It’s going to be less about skills and more about behaviours.
  • The kind of thing the CISO is, the person they are, that’s going to be the really important thing.
