Keynote Roundup: Andrew Rose

Infosecurity Europe

Keynote Roundup: Andrew Rose, CISO and Head of Cyber Security, UK Transport Sector

Missed Andrew Rose’s keynote on Securing the Connected Human: Winning Hearts and Minds to Drive Secure Behaviour? Not to worry, here’s an overview of all the key points.

What was covered in your Infosecurity Europe keynote?

  • A look at the importance of security awareness in order to ensure your organisation can protect themselves against cyber threats.

Why is that such an important issue for the industry at the moment?

  • A great deal of cyber security attacks come through the human interface.
  • Cyber criminals try to trick users into clicking on links and downloading malware.
  • It’s very important that the human becomes a firewall protecting the organisation.
  • Users and those within your organisation need to be given the information they require in order to protect themselves and the organisation.

What were the key points the audience took away from your session?

  • Think about security awareness in a different way, don’t think about security awareness, think about security behavior change.
  • A great example is smoking, everyone knows smoking is dangerous, but still millions of people smoke.
  • It’s not about awareness, you have to concentrate on how you are going to change their behavior. That’s what will make a difference to your organisation.

What are your recommendations for anyone out there addressing this issue?

  • Think about cyber security awareness from a marketing angle.
  • Marketers have been advertising to us for centuries, making us change our behaviour.
  • Let’s see if we can steal some ideas from marketers and make awareness campaigns more about behaviour and change that with marketing techniques.

How do you think this issue will develop over the next 12 months?

  • There will not be any radical shake up of security awareness.
  • There will be a growing trend and focus across the industry that the human factor, the human firewall is so important to the overall solution.
